Niigataology

Description:  Niigataology is a English documentary project (International) that explores the many layers of Japanese Culture (National) and then does a cultural deep-dive into the different areas of Niigata Prefecture (Region) through Niigata Culture (Prefectoral). The topics have a focus — like rock culture, rice (kmj. kome, jp.米), geigis (芸妓), or snow (rmj. yuki, jp.雪). The intention is to talk about the history, the cultural importance, daily life importance, and unpacking ideas from the popular to the obscure as well as the local to the foreign. The project involves deep research, appreciative perspective, and seeks to inform and understand Niigata Prefecture as well as someone who has lived there for a lifetime. The goal is to turn what is seemingly ordinary to the people of Niigata into the fascinating by showing how even small things reflect Japan's unique values and history.
